Athletics has been part of the Islands Games since its inception in 1985. This summer the athletics competitions will be held in a new sports complex that has been built with the approval of the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) in the old military installations of Lathbury Barracks.

|End Date||12 July 2019|
There are great expectations for the Gibraltar team. The Gibraltarian athletes are familiar with the podium for their experience in previous Games, bringing home five Jersey medals in 2015 and seven Gotland medals in 2017. With the advantage of participating at home, this summer should also be a success of watching Island Games 2019 Live Stream.

The expression ‘anonymous hero’ has never been so successful when we refer to the person responsible for the success of Gibraltar over these years. The coach Hector Romero is a very discreet person who avoids at all costs the attention of the media, but his devotion and commitment to the development of athletics in Gibraltar is unparalleled.
Now, at 70, he is considered a father figure, not only for the athletes, but also for the rest of the staff. His experience, knowledge and personality make him worthy of great respect. For him, the maximum effort is the minimum requirement.
Much of the praise comes from team director Avelino Baldachino, who was also a good middle distance runner in the 80s. However, when he was married at age 26 he decided to leave his shoes aside: “The worst decision I’ve taken in my life! ”
“I’m so sorry … I never thought that the Games of the Islands would become an event of such magnitude. I would have got medals for Gibraltar with the times I was achieving, “he says recalling past times.
But that is already part of the past. Currently, he is firmly focused on the upcoming Island Games and his team. The most outstanding athlete in Gibraltar is Harvey Dixon, 25, a semi-professional half-distance runner who now resides in the United Kingdom. Last year he became the first Gibraltarian athlete to reach the final of the Commonwealth Games when he qualified for the men’s 1,500 meters in Gold Coast, Australia.
Gibraltar 2019 Island Games Live is also fortunate to have a group of talented sprinters consisting of Jerai Torres, Zyanne Hook, Laura Bevington, Craig Gill and Jesse Franco (who holds the current national record of 100 meters in 10.90 seconds). All of them are in good shape and eager to start.
Kim Baglietto is another one that we must not lose sight of. I was fortunate to witness how everything happened in the women’s half marathon of the Jersey games in 2015.
A race to which Kim had signed up that same day. Against all odds she was the first to turn the final curve as a warrior after the battle, wounded and dejected, but taking home the gold medal.
Traditionally athletics competitions have always taken the worst part in Gibraltar. The main problem was the lack of space, but now with the recent wave of interest and new sports facilities, Gibraltar has a new dose of hope. Jumping Triple Jump Karla Kaemmerlen, 17, and Jack Norton, 18, in High Jump have shown good progress. Despite their inexperience, the Games this summer could be the place where they show everything they are capable of.
At a recent sports awards ceremony, Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said Gibraltar is ready to ‘revolutionize sport’ once the sports facilities are finished on island games 2019 live stream. These are exciting times for Gibraltar and its people, especially for those who practice athletics; a new platform in which to stand out in the years to come.
